Accessibility statement |
|
We recognise the importance of providing a website that is accessible by all users. As such, we have gone to great lengths to ensure our website is fast loading, well coded and accessible.
The site is built using valid, standards compliant XHTML and CSS, and it achieves Conformance Level "A" of the Web Content Accesibility Guidelines.
We have incorporated the following features into the website to make it accessible to those with disabilities and those using 'non-standard' browsing devices.
NavigationA hidden menu has been added to the beginning of each page to allow those using screen readers to navigate through the site. In addition, access keys have been assigned to each of the main links throughout the site as follows:
Skip Navigation linkA 'Skip Navigation' link has been added at the start of each page to enable those using text browsers or assistive technology to skip directly to the main content.
Semantic markupThe site uses a combination of minimal layout tables and semantic markup that helps to convey document structure - for example, H1 tags for main titles, P tags for paragraphs, and the navigation bar marked up as an HTML list. Even when style sheets are switched off, the content is still laid out in a logical way.
LinksAll links contain title attributes which summarise the link for users of assistive technology, and act as 'mouse hovering' guidance to other users.
TextThe site uses relative font sizes, which allows users to resize text in their browser. Usually, the controls for this are located in the browser's View menu, and may be called Text Size or Text Zoom.
ImagesAll images used in this site utilise descriptive 'alt' attributes. For any images which are purely decorative, the alt tag is set to null to allow screen readers to skip over them.
FormsAll form fields follow a logical tab sequence to aid navigation. All form fields contain 'label' and 'id' attributes to explicitly associate the form field with its label, which creates a larger clickable area, allowing easier entry of data.
JavascriptIn the interests of maximum compatibility with user input devices, no javascript has been used on this site. Menu bar highlights are achieved using style sheets.
